The Sisterhood

I do not know the muses,
and they do not know me,
but all daughters of unkind gods
are sister, and we
recognize each other
passing on the street
and give each other poems
now and then for free.

One of the things I’ve learned over the past few years is the importance of sisterhood. The roller derby world is a particularly beautiful and complex example. There’s more to mine here than I can cover in a short poem or blog post, but I love this little poem because I think it touches the core of the matter — sisters recognize each other in their hearts and in their art, whatever that art may be. For me, it’s poems, photography, letter-writing, so on, but it’s also in derby, in business, and in meeting a stranger on the street who needs a meal or a metro card or whatever we’ve got to give.
