Experiment with new beliefs. Try on an idea to see how it wears. Go around believing in magic. Just try to pretend, and see if you can convince yourself. No one has to know that for a minute, you believed you could pull a rabbit from a hat. Some beliefs grow impractical quickly. Some beliefs feel bad. Some are kinda fun. No one’s judging. Let your mind wander. See what happens.
Over the past year or so, I’ve begun to think of myself as a creative mercenary. Human beings have the right to do what is in our best interests. I happen to believe that deep and relentless creativity is in our best interest.
Be willing to throw tradition under the bus if your art calls for it.
If there is someone in your life who gives you the crazy eyes when you say something too honest, make it your goal to upset that person on a daily basis. This is good for both you and them. With any luck, Old Crazy Eyes will wind up with slightly expanded horizons thanks to your bravery, and you will develop a sharpness of nerve that simply cannot be replaced.
I’m not advocating for hurting anyone, and I never would. Compassion, my dears. Remember compassion always. But Kahlil Gibran was right when he wrote, “Your pain is the breaking of the shell that encloses your understanding.”
