The other day I wrote a blog post about the root c The other day I wrote a blog post about the root chakra, and it's available on my blog or my Patreon. I'm trying this thing where I share most of my content for free but give a little extra to anyone who joins the Patreon, like snippets of art, reflections on life, etc. It's a work in progress as all living things are. The root chakra post is part of a long term project in which I hope to write about my spiritual path and eventually share the whole shebang for free, but the process will all be published on the Patreon as I go because that adds an element of communal creativity that I crave. I love working in small formats because I can get really creative and try all kinds of new things with just four square inches, and if I make a mistake I don't feel like I've ruined years' of effort. A small piece of art is a meditation, an experiment, a brief reflection. Sometimes it can be a profound experience. And sometimes it ends up in the trash. NBD. I'm pretty sure the former owners of our home had a pollinator garden, but it hasn't been kept up in a little while. Now I'm learning about gardening with natives and how that supports the local ecosystem, so I'm dipping my toes in. This is me feeling tired, depressed, anxious, and overwhelmed. Don't worry -- I am safe, supported and not at risk -- but depression is real, and it happens to people who may appear strong and happy most of the time. My coping strategy starts with the basics: feel it, recognize it, tell someone it's happening, rest and practice self kindness. If you're feeling it, I want you to know you're not alone. There are countless perfectly good reasons why we feel terrible these days. Finding ways to nurse ourselves through it is key. I don't expect myself to be anything other than I am in this moment. I try to let the moment pass. I reach out to the people who make me feel supported, and I wrap myself up in handmade blankets from loved ones. I love you all. Support one another and be kind to yourself, please.

The other day I attended my first meeting with the The other day I attended my first meeting with the Maryland Poor People's Campaign (a national movement with active groups in almost every state). Since moving to MD, I have fallen in love with this place and all the diverse and beautiful people who live here, yet I've struggled to find a foothold in any form of activism and have felt disconnected and isolated in my efforts. The PPC feels like it may be the community I need at this stage -- an opportunity for learning, growth and connection. I'm so thankful for this group because after only one meeting I already feel less alone and more able to take meaningful action. Anyone who's looking for support in their activism should look into local chapters of the Poor People's Campaign. I know what's right for me might not be right for everyone but I want y'all to know about this resource. Community is powerful! It's through our connection with one another that we change the world. I'm still working through Resmaa Menakem's book, M I'm still working through Resmaa Menakem's book, My Grandmother's Hands. This book requires that we take our time with it, process, reflect, and *feel* our way through it. Also, I'm a slow reader. 🙃 But the time invested is worth it. When we understand the ways that trauma and racism are embedded in our culture we can start to make new choices and build a culture that genuinely embraces all our human family. This book does not erase any of the harsh realities we must address, but it gives me hope that we can handle it together. I want as many people as possible to read it because if we all take on these challenges with these tools (knowledge, embodiment, self awareness, reflection, compassion) we become empowered to build the world we all deserve. I can't tell you how many times I've wanted to take a picture of the page I'm reading, highlight key phrases and share with the world, but if I did that every time I'd take even longer to get through it. 😬 There is just so much of value here. Please read this book, especially if you're an organizer, leader, teacher, coach, or in any other position where you can help build the culture of your community. Being deliberate and self aware in our leadership roles is especially important. #readthis #antiracism #embodiment #selfwork
