My husband gave me this sweet setup for starting s My husband gave me this sweet setup for starting seeds after my initial venture I'm gardening last spring. Its not quite time to plant but probably time to find where they will live and make sure the seeds are ready. What should I plant??? He requests some flowers for the planters outside at least. I've got a bunch of herbs in the works already. Maybe something with exciting foliage? Something bees will love? A garden has such possibilities...

Current reading: Where do We Go From Here: Chaos o Current reading: Where do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community? By Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. When I first started reading this book, I asked myself why I hadn't been assigned to read it in school or why I never just picked it up on my own before. The more I read, the more I realize Dr. King perceived and spoke honestly about things white America (including me) really didn't want to see or deal with. The past has been gruesome, and our shame runs deep. But I don't feel put to shame by this book or by any current activist or author either. I feel thankful that this work exists and lays out the path by which we can change ourselves and our world. The discomfort of being a dissenting white-bodied person in a white supremacist culture is soothed by honestly acknowleding the truth of who we are and where we have been. We have choices to make about where we go next, and Dr. King and others have done a massive amount of the groundwork for us. At this moment, as I look at the world we've created so far, I see how so much of our current struggle would have been transformed if we'd really listened from the start. Is it ever too late to do the right thing? I don't think so, but either way, our failures of the past must not stop us from trying to do right in the future.

Mr. Mao says: Good morning and happy new year, and Mr. Mao says: Good morning and happy new year, and also, how do you intend to make 2021 different from 2020? Is a new president the solution? Will ending the pandemic be the difference we're looking for? Or will it take more than that, like maybe daily effort and reflection, clarity of intention, thoughtful communication, and the determination to keep taking steps every day... If we want 2021 to be better, *we* have to be better. So drink your coffee, pet your critters and get ready to bring the best you have to offer this year.
My current reading: Don't Label Me by @realirshadm My current reading: Don't Label Me by @realirshadmanji. I'm about halfway through it now and I recommend it because the author does a brilliant job of discussing a complex topic in an approachable and compassionate way. If you know me, you know I'm as liberal as the open sky itself, but I still run into barriers in my own mind (my lack of understanding, my own biases, etc.) as well as in the people around me. This book is all about bridging those gaps where we fail to understand one another in order to build truly diverse, inclusive, sustainable, and compassionate communities. A strong balance of storytelling, a loveable narrating voice, and good application of research make this book very digestible for people who want to put their values to work and are willing to question their own assumptions.
